Late Enrollment Penalty
Effective August, 2007, Medicare began a program that requires beneficiaries to pay what is known as a "late enrollment penalty."
If an individual doesn't join a Medicare drug plan when he or she first is eligible, and goes without creditable prescription drug coverage (as good as Medicare's) for 63 continuous days or more, the individual may have to pay a late enrollment penalty to join a plan later. This penalty amount changes every year and must be paid as long as the individual has Medicare prescription drug coverage. However, if the individual qualifies for extra help, he or she may not have to pay a late enrollment penalty, or may get help paying the late enrollment penalty.
Please check with your group administrator to determine if your employer-sponsored Capital Health Plan coverage is considered creditable prescription drug coverage and whether you have had any coverage gap for 63 continuous days or more.
